The EU-backed TREASURE Project Selects SolarinBlue, Rotary Wave, and Eco Wave Power for Environmental Solutions in Euro-MED Ports

The European Union (EU)-backed TREASURE project has chosen renewable energy company SolarinBlue, Rotary Wave start-up, and wave energy developer Eco Wave Power as part of the 52 companies selected to tackle environmental challenges in Euro-MED ports.

The TREASURE initiative, co-funded by the EU, initiated a call for expressions of interest on September 16, 2024, to find solutions for environmental issues related to ports.

The selection process focused on technological innovation, scalability across various port environments, and potential impact, according to TREASURE.

The challenges outlined in the call encompassed offshore and onshore renewable energy deployment, water and wastewater management, biodiversity protection, sediment remediation, air quality enhancement, and waste management.

Among the chosen technologies, SolarinBlue’s offshore solar solution from France will be examined for its role in environmental remediation at port sites.

“By harnessing solar energy at sea, ports can reduce their carbon footprint, enhance energy resilience, and optimize available space without impacting land use,” SolarinBlue stated.

Following SolarinBlue’s announcement, the next stages include workshops with project partners and potential pilot implementations, introducing fresh opportunities to showcase the significance of offshore solar in the energy transition of maritime infrastructures.

By the deadline of December 13, 2024, 59 applications were submitted from 47 organizations across 13 countries. A transnational committee assessed the applications and shortlisted 52 solutions for further exploration.

Some of these solutions may be put into action in TREASURE ports within the upcoming year.

In June 2024, SolarinBlue received €6 million in funding for its floating solar project from the French government as part of the France 2030 program, managed by ADEME, the French Agency for Ecological Transition.
