Evergreen Marine Corporation Orders $3 Billion Worth of LNG Dual-Fuel Containerships

Taiwanese container shipping company Evergreen Marine Corporation has made a significant investment in sustainable shipping with a recent order of new LNG dual-fuel containerships worth approximately $3 billion.

The order, consisting of eleven vessels with a capacity of 24,000 TEUs, marks a strategic move towards reducing emissions and embracing cleaner energy sources in the maritime industry.

Construction Details

The construction of the new containerships will be divided between CSSC Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in China and Hanwha Ocean in South Korea. Evergreen will pay around $265 million to $295 million per unit, totaling up to approximately $1.77 billion for the six vessels at Hanwha Ocean and around $1.47 billion for the five containerships at GSI.

Environmentally Friendly Propulsion

One of the notable features of the newly ordered containerships is their LNG dual-fuel propulsion system. This technology is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions and improve the sustainability of Evergreen’s fleet. Deliveries of the vessels are anticipated to commence around 2028.

Transition to LNG

By opting for LNG dual-fuel containerships, Evergreen has shifted away from its previous focus on methanol-fueled vessels. In 2023, the company ordered 24 methanol dual-fuel 16,000 TEU boxships, scheduled for delivery between 2026 and 2027.

Additionally, in 2024, Evergreen booked six 2,400 TEU methanol dual-fuel containerships in China, further aligning its operations with sustainable practices.

Continued Commitment to Decarbonization

With this latest order, Evergreen Marine Corporation demonstrates its continued commitment to decarbonizing its operations and embracing environmentally friendly solutions in the maritime sector. The company’s efforts to invest in cleaner energy sources and modern propulsion technologies showcase its dedication to sustainability.

Overall, Evergreen’s strategic move towards LNG dual-fuel containerships reflects a broader industry trend towards greener shipping practices and underscores the importance of sustainability in the maritime sector.
