ExxonMobil Embraces 4D Seismic Technology and High-Performance Computing to Revolutionize Subsurface Capabilities

U.S.-headquartered energy giant ExxonMobil is on the brink of a seismic revolution as it aims to reduce processing time from months to weeks with the integration of 4D seismic technology and high-performance computing (HPC). This strategic move is set to elevate the firm’s subsurface capabilities to new heights.

ExxonMobil is gearing up to deploy cutting-edge 4D seismic technology in conjunction with high-performance computing to showcase its dedication to technological advancement and solidify its position as a leader in subsurface exploration.

The company reminisced on its groundbreaking introduction of 3D seismic imaging nearly 50 years ago, which revolutionized oil and gas exploration by providing detailed underground formations maps through the use of seismic sound waves and supercomputers. This innovation set a new industry standard for accuracy in locating oil and gas deposits.

ExxonMobil’s latest supercomputer, Discovery 6, a product of collaboration with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and accelerated by NVIDIA, promises up to four times faster performance compared to its predecessor. This technological leap is expected to enhance the precision and efficiency of oil and gas exploration.

The amalgamation of 4D seismic technology and the Discovery 6 supercomputer is anticipated to significantly reduce processing time, paving the way for near real-time visualization, improved reservoir management, and increased resource recovery with reduced capital investment.

The introduction of ExxonMobil’s elastic full wavefield inversion (eFWI) technology alongside the Discovery 6 supercomputer is poised to revolutionize the industry by providing rapid insights into rock and fluid properties, aiding in the identification of hydrocarbon reservoirs, and optimizing development and production processes.

With the installation of the HPE Cray Supercomputing EX4000 powered by NVIDIA Grace Hopper Superchips and HPE Slingshot interconnect expected in the first half of 2025, ExxonMobil is taking a significant step towards enhancing its computational capabilities and solidifying its stance in the realm of high-performance computing.

ExxonMobil’s investment in advanced seismic processing technologies and high-performance computing capacity underscores its commitment to driving innovation and maximizing value capture from its global assets. The future looks promising as the energy giant continues to push the boundaries of technology in the pursuit of sustainable and efficient resource extraction.
