Marinus Link: A Game-Changer in Renewable Energy Transmission

Shareholders of Marinus Link (MLPL) have taken a significant step forward by making a Final Investment Decision to proceed with Stage 1 of Marinus Link. This groundbreaking project involves the development of an undersea and underground electricity and data interconnector that will facilitate the transmission of low-cost renewable energy between North West Tasmania and Victoria.

The scope of the project includes the installation of high voltage direct current (HVDC) cables, fibre optic cables, a communications station, and converter stations at both ends. The cables will cover a distance of 345 kilometers, with 255 kilometers crossing the Bass Strait underwater and 90 kilometers running underground in Gippsland, Victoria.

With a capacity of 1,500MW, Marinus Link will be capable of powering 1.5 million Australian homes, which is three times the capacity of the existing Tasmania to Victoria interconnector, Basslink. The project will be executed in two stages, starting with a 750MW link for Stage 1, followed by another 750MW link in Stage 2.

One of the key benefits of Marinus Link is the expected reduction in wholesale electricity prices across the national electricity market, leading to significant savings for consumers. Construction is slated to begin in 2026, with Stage 1 anticipated for completion by 2030. The project has already received approval under Commonwealth environmental legislation.

MLPL is a joint venture between the Commonwealth of Australia, the State of Tasmania, and the State of Victoria, underscoring the collaborative effort to drive sustainable energy transmission and support the transition to a cleaner and greener future.
