The Galveston LNG Bunker Port: A Milestone in Clean Fuel Supply
The Galveston LNG Bunker Port has reached a significant milestone with full permits for construction granted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and a recommendation from the U.S. Coast Guard. This groundbreaking project, spearheaded by partners Pilot LNG and Seapath Group, a subsidiary of the Libra Group, is set to become the first LNG bunker port on the Gulf Coast.
Located on the Texas City Ship Channel in the Texas City industrial area, the Galveston LNG Bunker Port will play a crucial role in supplying LNG by fuel barge to the growing fleet of LNG-fueled vessels in the Houston-Galveston region. With its strategic location, the bunker hub will serve major ports such as Port Houston, the Port of Galveston, and the Port of Texas City.
Phased Development for Optimal Capacity
The development plan for the terminal consists of two phases. The first phase will encompass a 140-acre site with an initial capacity of 360,000 gallons per day, targeting product deliveries by the second half of 2027. The second phase, scheduled to follow within 8 to 12 months, will increase the total capacity to 720,000 gallons per day, supported by two 3-million-gallon storage tanks.
Josh Lubarsky, President of Seapath Group, expressed confidence in the project’s progress, stating, “We have made a significant financial commitment to this project and positioned GLBP as the foremost clean fuel supply hub in the Galveston Bay/Gulf region.”
Advancing Clean Fuel Initiatives
With an estimated cost exceeding $300 million, the Galveston LNG Bunker Port is a testament to the partners’ dedication to advancing clean fuel initiatives. Earlier this year, the project received authorization from the state of Texas, marking a significant step towards its realization.
Currently, LNG supply in the region is facilitated by JAX LNG in Jacksonville, Florida, with a capacity of 360,000 gallons per day. The Galveston LNG Bunker Port’s entry into the market is poised to establish it as a leading supplier of dedicated LNG marine fuels in the U.S. Gulf region.
