Wave Energy Innovator Eco Wave Power Receives Permit for Demonstration Project in California

Wave energy developer Eco Wave Power has recently achieved a significant milestone in its mission to harness the power of the ocean for renewable energy. The company has been granted Revocable Permit 25-05 from the Port of Los Angeles, allowing Eco Wave Power to proceed with the construction and demonstration of its innovative wave energy technology at Berth 70 in San Pedro, California.

The approval of the permit, which was signed off by Executive Director Eugene D. Seroka on March 27, 2025, marks a crucial step forward for Eco Wave Power’s expansion into the U.S. market. With all necessary permits now secured, the company anticipates completing the installation within the next 2-3 months.

Partnership and Project Details

The pilot project, developed in collaboration with Shell Marine Renewable Energy (Shell MRE) and AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles, will involve the installation of up to eight wave energy floaters on an existing concrete wharf structure at Municipal Pier One. Additionally, an energy conversion unit housed in two 20-foot shipping containers will be positioned on the wharf deck and connected to the floaters. The installation of the conversion unit is expected to be finalized by the end of Q2 2025.

CEO of Eco Wave Power, Inna Braverman, expressed her excitement about the project, stating, “We are thrilled to collaborate with the Port of Los Angeles, AltaSea, and Shell MRE to introduce our sustainable energy technology to one of the most significant ports in the country.”

Environmental Impact and Future Prospects

Wave energy has the potential to generate over 1,400 terawatt-hours annually, which is sufficient to power approximately 130 million homes, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Eco Wave Power’s pilot project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of wave energy as a reliable renewable power source, paving the way for larger-scale deployments in the U.S.

AltaSea CEO Terry Tamminen emphasized the importance of supporting cutting-edge solutions for the blue economy, highlighting Eco Wave Power’s technology as a prime example of innovation in sustainable energy. The collaboration between the companies signifies a shared commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions.

Continued Growth and Recognition

In a further demonstration of Eco Wave Power’s progress and recognition within the industry, the company recently appointed Hilary E. Ackermann, a board member at Vistra Energy, to its advisory board. This strategic move underscores Eco Wave Power’s commitment to leveraging expertise and experience to drive its mission forward.

With the successful approval of permits and the ongoing development of its wave energy project, Eco Wave Power continues to position itself as a key player in the renewable energy sector, contributing to the advancement of sustainable energy solutions for a greener future.
