TUI Cruises Takes Delivery of First LNG-Powered Cruise Ship from Fincantieri

TUI Cruises, a joint venture between German TUI Group and Royal Caribbean Cruises, has officially received the first of two groundbreaking liquefied natural gas (LNG) and marine gas oil (MGO) powered cruise ships from Fincantieri, the renowned Italian shipbuilder. This delivery marks a significant milestone in the maritime industry’s transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.

Named Mein Schiff Relax, this state-of-the-art vessel is part of the innovative InTUItion-class and boasts a gross tonnage of approximately 160,000 tons, making it a substantial addition to TUI Cruises’ fleet. The ship is equipped to run on LNG, a cleaner-burning fuel, and is designed to be adaptable to future low-emission fuels like bio- or e-LNG, demonstrating TUI Cruises’ commitment to environmentally friendly cruising.

Mein Schiff Relax is outfitted with advanced technologies to minimize its environmental impact. The ship features catalytic converters that meet Euro 6 standards, a generative turbine that harnesses residual heat from the diesel generators, and an electrical shore-power connection, enabling almost emission-free operations while in port. Fincantieri estimates that these measures will reduce emissions during port stays, which account for about 40% of the ship’s operating time.

Additionally, Mein Schiff Relax is equipped with a highly efficient waste treatment system that can convert organic materials into recyclable components through a thermal process, further enhancing the ship’s sustainability credentials.

The delivery of Mein Schiff Relax is a significant step towards TUI Cruises’ goal of offering climate-neutral cruising experiences to its passengers. The ship’s sister vessel, currently under construction at Fincantieri, is expected to be delivered in mid-2026, further expanding TUI Cruises’ eco-friendly fleet.

As the maritime industry continues to prioritize sustainability and environmental responsibility, TUI Cruises’ investment in LNG-powered ships like Mein Schiff Relax sets a positive example for the future of cruising. With its cutting-edge technology and commitment to reducing emissions, this new vessel represents a significant advancement in the quest for greener and more sustainable maritime transportation.
