Fincantieri Invests in WSense for Underwater Monitoring and Communication

Fincantieri, a leading shipbuilding company, has recently announced its investment in WSense, a deep tech scale-up specializing in underwater monitoring and communication. This strategic move solidifies Fincantieri’s commitment to innovation and digitalization in the maritime industry.

The investment entails a convertible loan of $2.84 million, with the potential to increase the investment by an additional $2.84 million. The conversion of the loan into equity will be subject to specific conditions, typical of such transactions. The completion of the investment is contingent upon meeting certain agreed-upon conditions and obtaining necessary authorizations.

The collaboration between Fincantieri and WSense, initiated through a memorandum of understanding in December 2023, has already yielded positive outcomes. The companies have secured three tenders from the Italian National Center for the Underwater Domain, focusing on developing advanced solutions for underwater communication.

Furthermore, Fincantieri and WSense are actively participating in Italian and European tenders for underwater innovation and jointly presenting commercial proposals. This investment in WSense aligns with Fincantieri’s Underwater strategy, bolstering its expertise in underwater communication technologies, particularly in dual-use applications.

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and General Manager of Fincantieri, emphasized the significance of this investment in advancing the monitoring and security of maritime infrastructures. He highlighted WSense’s technologies as pivotal for shaping the future of shipbuilding and underwater defense.

By supporting WSense, an Italian center of excellence in wireless networks and underwater surveillance systems, Fincantieri is reinforcing its leadership in the industry while contributing to the growth of innovative solutions in Italy’s industrial landscape.
