Finnish Coast Guard Assists Oil Tanker with Engine Failure in Gulf of Finland
The Finnish coast guard announced on Monday that they were dispatching a patrol vessel and a tugboat to aid an oil tanker that had experienced engine failure in the Gulf of Finland. The primary objective of the operation is to prevent any potential environmental damage resulting from the incident.
The oil tanker in distress, named M/T Jazz, measures 183 meters (600 feet) in length and flies the flag of Panama. After encountering engine troubles, the vessel was adrift south of Finland’s Hanko Peninsula before eventually dropping anchor in the vicinity. Fortunately, the coast guard confirmed that the situation was not linked to the recent incidents involving damage to undersea power and telecoms cables in the area, ensuring that seabed infrastructure was not at risk when the ship came to a stop.
It was noted that at the time of the engine failure, the M/T Jazz was en route to the Russian port of Primorsk and was not carrying any oil cargo. This information was provided in a statement released by the Finnish coast guard.
