The Nordeseecluster Offshore Wind Project Reaches Milestone with Arrival of Foundations

The Nordeseecluster, a massive 1.8GW offshore wind project in the German North Sea, has reached a significant milestone with the arrival and offloading of the first eight foundations in the Dutch base port Eemshaven.

The foundations, averaging around 85 meters in length and weighing approximately 1,500 tonnes each (equivalent to the weight of 800 cars), mark the beginning of the construction phase for this ambitious project.

Project Details

Developed by RWE, the Nordeseecluster will comprise two phases – Nordseecluster A with 660MW expected to be commissioned by 2027, followed by Nordseecluster B adding another 900MW by 2029.

A total of 45 monopile foundations will pass through the Buss Terminal in Eemshaven in 2025, with 44 supporting wind turbines and one for the transformer substation.

Manufacturing and Logistics

The foundations were manufactured and delivered by Dajin Heavy Industry, showcasing their expertise in producing large-scale offshore structures.

Starting in summer 2025, these foundations will be transported from Eemshaven to the construction site located 50 kilometers north of Juist island, setting the stage for the installation of the wind turbines.

Wind Turbines and Grid Connection

Vestas has been selected to supply its V236-15.0 MW offshore wind turbines for the Nordeseecluster project, with installation of the 44 turbines for Nordseecluster A set for 2026 and full grid connection by early 2027.

Nordseecluster B will contribute an additional 60 wind turbines, further enhancing the project’s renewable energy capacity.

Impact and Future Plans

Once operational, the Nordeseecluster will generate enough green electricity to power approximately 1.6 million households, making a significant contribution to Germany’s renewable energy goals.

Thomas Michel, COO of RWE Offshore Wind, emphasized the importance of the project’s progress, highlighting the synergies created by utilizing the Buss Terminal Eemshaven for multiple offshore wind projects.
