The Future of Offshore Wind Support Vessels: Introducing the Windcat Rotterdam

The commissioning service operation vessel Windcat Rotterdam is set to revolutionize the offshore wind industry. Recently completing sea trials and nearing delivery, this vessel represents a significant advancement in efficiency, performance, and comfort. What sets it apart is its capability to be powered by hydrogen, a groundbreaking development in the maritime sector.

A New Era of Alternative Fuel

CMB.TECH, in collaboration with Damen, has spearheaded the design and construction of the Windcat Rotterdam and five other vessels in its class. Originally ordered in 2022, the fleet has been expanded to meet the growing demand for eco-friendly solutions in offshore operations. With a focus on driving the deployment of alternative fuels, CMB.TECH’s Windcat division has taken the lead in adopting hydrogen technology.

Setting a New Standard

At 6,700 gross tons, the vessels in the Elevation Series are a significant leap forward in the CSOV sector. Measuring 87 meters in length, each ship features 90 cabins and accommodations for up to 120 personnel, with the capability to stay onsite for extended periods of up to 30 days. The innovative design includes a diesel-battery hybrid power generation system and a dual-fuel genset powered by hydrogen, marking a shift towards sustainable energy sources.

Efficiency and Sustainability at the Core

The integration of a hybrid-electric propulsion system and optimized thruster configuration ensures maximum efficiency during transfer operations. With a focus on reducing fuel consumption and emissions, the Windcat Rotterdam represents a new era of environmentally conscious maritime technology. The vessel’s advanced ecosystem design has been rigorously tested at sea, validating its performance and reliability.

Pioneering Hydrogen Technology

Central to the Elevation Series is CMB.TECH’s dual fuel hydrogen technology, offering the flexibility to adapt to evolving energy markets. As the industry moves towards a more sustainable future, the Windcat Rotterdam stands as a testament to innovation and progress. Designed with future-proof technology, these vessels are poised to lead the way in eco-friendly offshore operations.

Driving Sustainable Solutions

With the completion of sea trials and final outfitting underway, the Windcat Rotterdam is on track for delivery. As the first of its kind in a new generation of offshore support vessels, it represents a significant step towards a more sustainable and efficient maritime industry. The collaboration between CMB.TECH and Damen has set a new standard for eco-friendly shipping, paving the way for a cleaner and greener future.
