First U.S. Carriers in 12 Years Visit Malaysia to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

The U.S. Strengthens Ties with Malaysia Through Naval Visits

The recent visit of two U.S. aircraft carriers to Port Klang, Malaysia marks a significant milestone in the relationship between the two countries. The arrival of the USS Abraham Lincoln and the USS Carl Vinson signifies the first official port calls by U.S. carriers in Malaysia in over a decade, following the infamous “Fat Leonard” scandal that tainted the partnership.

The visit comes at a crucial time as the U.S. aims to bolster its ties in the region in response to China’s growing influence. The deployments of the carriers highlight the U.S.’s commitment to strengthening security cooperation with Malaysia as part of the broader U.S.-Malaysia Comprehensive Partnership.

U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia, Edgard D. Kagan, emphasized the significance of the visits, stating that they underscore the deep-rooted security ties between the two nations. The U.S. first established diplomatic relations with Malaysia in 1957, and the recent port calls serve as a testament to the enduring partnership between the two countries.

Rebuilding Trust After the “Fat Leonard” Scandal

The last reported port calls by U.S. carriers to Malaysia occurred in October 2012, prior to the exposure of the “Fat Leonard” scandal. Leonard Francis, the Malaysian businessman behind the scandal, used bribes and favors to secure lucrative Navy contracts, leading to a breakdown in trust between the U.S. Navy and Malaysia.

However, with Francis now behind bars, the U.S. Navy has taken proactive steps to rebuild trust and strengthen ties with Malaysia. The recent visits by the USS Abraham Lincoln and the USS Carl Vinson serve as a positive step towards restoring the partnership.

Enhancing Bilateral Cooperation

During their time in Port Klang, the U.S. carriers engaged in various activities to foster cooperation between the navies of both countries. The USS Carl Vinson and its accompanying ships, including the USS Princeton and USS Sterett, participated in cultural exchanges and community engagement activities during their port call in Malaysia. With nearly 7,500 sailors involved in these activities, the visits served as an opportunity to build connections with the local community and showcase the strong partnership between the U.S. and Malaysia.
