ORBCOMM has announced that its smart container monitoring technology will be deployed by Folk Maritime Services Company across its container fleet to improve supply chain visibility and cargo protection.

Folk Maritime, a Saudi Arabian feeder and regional liner services provider, is claimed to become the “first” container shipping line from the Middle East to implement a smart dry container fleet.

The dry container monitoring technology offers real-time and historical location reporting, enhancing asset visibility, optimising operations, and supporting sustainability efforts.

Folk Maritime can enhance container security with door sensors that provide alerts for door openings and closings, allowing for prompt responses to potential cargo damage or theft.

This solution will allow Folk Maritime to monitor assets and cargo throughout the supply chain, enhancing visibility for its customers.

ORBCOMM chief commercial officer Christian Allred said: “Folk Maritime is inspiring, having launched its operation in February 2024 and already showing immense dedication to supply chain digitalisation.

“This collaboration further cements our position as industry leaders in smart container shipping solutions. We’re excited to see how our customers, and the maritime industry at large, continue to use our solutions to create a more sustainable and streamlined supply chain.”

In November 2024, ORBCOMM launched a new generation of its dry container IoT solution aimed at enhancing container security, safeguarding cargo integrity, and improving asset visibility.

This technology enables shipping lines to monitor for potential fires, detect unauthorised access to containers, receive alerts for possible damage, and offer better visibility of assets to customers.

The solution utilises ORBCOMM’s CT 1010 monitoring device for sensor-based monitoring within the container.
