Galp Strikes More Oil and Gas in Namibia’s Orange Basin
Portugal’s oil and gas company Galp continues its successful exploration and appraisal activities in Namibia’s Orange Basin, with the recent discovery of more light oil and gas-condensate in the PEL 83 license area. The company’s ongoing campaign has already seen significant discoveries in the region, further solidifying Namibia’s position as a promising oil and gas frontier.
The latest well, Mopane 2-A, drilled by the Saipem-owned Santorini drillship, encountered light oil and gas-condensate in high-quality reservoir-bearing sands. This follows the success of the previous Mopane 1-A well, indicating the presence of valuable hydrocarbons in the area.
Galp, along with its partners NAMCOR and Custos, is actively analyzing the data from the recent discoveries to assess the commercial potential of the Mopane complex. The absence of water contacts and the favorable reservoir characteristics bode well for the future development of these resources.
Exploration Campaign Continues
With the Santorini drillship now mobilizing to the Mopane-3X exploration well location, Galp is poised to further explore the stacked prospects of AVO-10 & AVO-13. The upcoming drilling activities are expected to commence around January 1, 2025, as part of the broader exploration and appraisal campaign in the region.
Additionally, a high-density and high-resolution proprietary 3D development seismic campaign is underway over the Mopane complex, providing valuable insights into the subsurface geology and potential resource distribution.
Orange Basin Emerges as a Key Exploration Area
The growing interest in Namibia’s Orange Basin is evident with companies like Africa Oil increasing their ownership stakes in blocks containing significant discoveries such as TotalEnergies’ Venus oil field. The region’s proximity to existing oil fields and the favorable geological characteristics make it a hotspot for further exploration and development activities.
Galp’s success in the Orange Basin underscores the untapped potential of Namibia’s offshore resources and positions the country as a key player in the global oil and gas industry. As exploration efforts continue to yield positive results, the future looks promising for unlocking the full hydrocarbon potential of the region.
