FSO fire claims four lives, injures five in Indonesia

Tragedy Strikes as Four Workers Lose Their Lives in FSO Unit Fire in Indonesia

On June 24, 2025, a devastating incident occurred at the ASL shipyard in Batam, Indonesia, where a fire broke out on the floating storage and offloading (FSO) unit named Federal II. The maintenance work being carried out on the vessel turned into a tragedy as four workers lost their lives in the fire, while five others sustained severe injuries.

The FSO Federal II, with a deadweight tonnage of 96,000, is owned by PT Eastern Jason (PTEJ), a company in which Singapore’s Federal International (2000) holds a 30% stake. The vessel is currently on charter to PT Pertamina Hulu Energi OSES under a seven-year service agreement until September 2030.

Converted into an FSO in 2014, the Federal II was undergoing a routine dry-docking exercise at the Indonesian shipyard when the tragic incident occurred. The owner of the vessel has reported that a thorough investigation is underway to assess the damage and determine the next steps to be taken.

With the Indonesian partner, holding a majority 70% interest in PTEJ, actively involved in the investigation process, the maritime industry awaits further updates on the findings and the measures to be implemented to prevent such incidents in the future.
