Thecla Bodewes Shipyards Delivers MV Iana to Transtal Shipping
The Netherlands-based Thecla Bodewes Shipyards recently celebrated the delivery of MV Iana, a 5,050 dwt diesel-electric multipurpose vessel, to compatriot short-sea shipping company Transtal Shipping. The red carpet was rolled out for the newbuild, marking a significant milestone in the maritime industry.
Following the delivery ceremony, MV Iana is now slated to be chartered by Dutch shipowner and operator Royal Wagenborg, further solidifying its role in the shipping market.
Measuring 87.30 meters in length, with a beam of 13.70 meters and a draught of 6.30 meters, MV Iana boasts a gross tonnage of 2,999 GT and a capacity of 5,900 cbm.
Sustainability at the Forefront
As the inaugural ship of Thecla Bodewes’ diesel-electric propelled SALMO series, MV Iana embodies energy efficiency, fuel efficiency, and sustainability. The vessel design has been crafted to be over 32% below the current IMO EEDI phase 3 requirement, showcasing the shipyard’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
Equipped with three 532bkW generator sets and a divided power system with two electric 600 ekW motors, MV Iana ensures efficient fuel consumption, making it a cost-effective and eco-friendly solution for short-sea shipping.
In anticipation of future regulations and advancements in alternative fuels, MV Iana has been future-proofed for options like methanol or hydrogen, aligning with the industry’s evolving sustainability goals.
Continued Innovation
The SALMO series, featuring an improved hull design, is a testament to Thecla Bodewes’ innovative approach to vessel construction. Drawing inspiration from the LABRAX concept tailored for Vertom Group, a key player in Dutch short sea shipping, the series offers enhanced performance and efficiency.
Vertom Group, initially commissioning a sextet of LABRAX units, has since expanded its fleet with additional newbuildings. The ongoing collaboration between Thecla Bodewes and Vertom Group underscores a shared commitment to advancing the maritime industry.
Conclusion
With MV Iana’s delivery marking a significant achievement for Thecla Bodewes Shipyards and Transtal Shipping, the vessel stands as a symbol of innovation and sustainability in the maritime sector. As the industry continues to evolve, partnerships and projects like the SALMO series and LABRAX concept pave the way for a greener, more efficient future at sea.
