Revolutionizing Offshore Wind Farm Environmental Impact Mitigation with Subsea Noise Modelling

Engineering specialist GHD has introduced a groundbreaking subsea noise modelling program aimed at minimizing the environmental repercussions of offshore wind farms. The RAT (R Acoustics Toolbox) is GHD’s innovative solution designed to tackle the challenges associated with underwater noise by offering a tailored, web-based interface that leverages existing algorithms in a customizable manner.

Powered by the R programming language, the RAT significantly enhances efficiency and accuracy in underwater noise modelling. This program streamlines processes like transect generation and data handling, previously performed manually, and presents intricate numerical data visually for easier comprehension and analysis.

GHD is currently engaged in impact assessments for emerging offshore wind projects in Australia, with underwater noise emerging as a critical component of these evaluations. Predicting the impacts on marine life necessitates underwater noise models, and the scarcity of commercial software solutions has historically hindered comprehensive assessments.

The advanced underwater noise modelling program has already proven its effectiveness on various projects, including oil and gas ventures in the Middle East, submarine cables, defense initiatives in Australia, and geophysical surveys in the U.K.

Looking ahead, GHD has ambitious plans to further enhance the RAT by incorporating features such as full movement models to simulate species’ responses to noise over time.

“The algorithm generates extensive data – spanning 10 kilometers in length and 500 meters in depth. We developed a system to visually represent these numbers, facilitating understanding even for seasoned modelers,” remarked Marco Velasco, GHD’s Senior Engineer in the Air & Noise Service Line.

“We are set to utilize this program in upcoming wind farm projects in Australia. It will be instrumental in mitigating and managing noise impacts on marine fauna resulting from these offshore renewable projects,” added Pri Pandey, GHD Service Line Leader – Air & Noise.
