Norwegian lighting solutions provider Glamox has secured a contract to provide comprehensive lighting solutions for two new salvage tugs commissioned by the Suez Canal Authority.

The vessels, crucial for maintaining the flow of traffic through the pivotal Suez Canal, will be constructed by Alexandria Shipyard in Egypt and are set to be equipped with advanced LED technology.

The lighting equipment is designed to meet the demands of maritime operations, with the tugs being built to Kongsberg Maritime’s UT 722 CDT design.

Each tug, measuring 71.6m in length and weighing approximately 200t, will be outfitted with around 780 marine-certified lights from Glamox.

Glamox offshore and wind division chief sales and commercial officer Tommy Stranden said: “The Suez Canal is an artery for world trade, so we’re delighted that our marine lighting is trusted to help keep open the world’s most important canal.

“It is estimated that approximately $10bn of goods a day pass through the Suez Canal. These vessels will become a critical part of the canal’s infrastructure going forward.”

The tugs are scheduled for delivery in 2025 and 2026.

The lighting package includes Luminell RLX floodlights, Norselight searchlights, and a range of Glamox products such as DL-70 indoor downlights, TL60 watertight linear luminaires, AL60 cabin lights, Aqua Signal Series 75 navigation lights, and NL95 touch screen navigation light controllers.

The RLX C G2 floodlights are intended to replace traditional 500W Halogen or smaller HPS/HMI lights.

Remote-controlled halogen searchlights, SH 310 and SH 470, suit all ship types, with up to nine Xenon or Halogen units connectable via Ethernet Cat5 cables.

The Glamox DL70-R is a lightweight LED downlight designed for marine use on a wide range of vessels.

The TL60 LED outdoor lighting fixtures are suitable for various spaces such as workshops, engine rooms, storage areas, and passageways.

The Glamox AL60 is a durable LED luminaire range, including berth, mirror, circular, and square indoor and outdoor lights.

The Aqua Signal’s Series 75 LED navigation lights are designed for vessels over 20m, prioritizing long product lifespan.

The NL95 system serves as a programmable control and monitoring solution for navigation and signal lights, featuring built-in software that simplifies programming without the need for external devices.
