Global OTEC Prepares to Deploy Floating Hull in the Atlantic Ocean

UK-based company Global OTEC is gearing up to launch its floating cylindrical hull into the Atlantic Ocean, with operations scheduled to commence once weather conditions permit. The deployment will occur at the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) off Gran Canaria, Spain.

The company has recently finalized all necessary preparatory measures, including anchor installation and obtaining clearance from the harbor master.

Global OTEC is now awaiting favorable wave conditions, with waves expected to remain below one meter to facilitate the towing of the structure to the designated test site. Upon reaching its position, Global OTEC will proceed with assembling the cold water pipe and proprietary connection point, marking the initiation of real-world testing.

“After three years of dedicated work, our team has successfully addressed a longstanding challenge in Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) by developing a floating structure capable of withstanding severe weather conditions. This advancement will enhance the reliability of OTEC technology in tropical storm zones, ensuring a stable source of clean energy for tropical island utilities,” stated the company.

PLOCAN serves as a versatile technical-scientific service infrastructure supporting research, technological development, and innovation in the marine and maritime sectors, catering to both public and private users.

In a significant move, Global OTEC and Brazil’s COPPE/UFRJ recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on advancing OTEC technology in Brazil. The two-year partnership will focus on joint research projects, knowledge exchange, and technological advancements.

Previous Milestones

In November 2024, Global OTEC achieved a significant milestone by deploying its storm-resistant floating platform, known as Don, into Atlantic waters. The cylindrical hull, constructed under the EU-funded PLOTEC project, was launched from Hidramar Shipyards for testing purposes.
