Green Marine UK Deploys Underwater Gliders for Data Collection in the North Sea

Green Marine UK has deployed a series of underwater gliders in the North Sea to support a data-collecting exercise led by the UK’s National Oceanography Centre (NOC) and the Met Office.

Operating for six-month intervals, the gliders will survey ocean depths approaching 200m for a three-year period. The project aims to improve the collection and distribution of data supporting both weather and ocean forecasts.

A range of measurements including salinity and temperature will be delivered to the Met Office in near real-time. It forms part of a wider program to increase the amount of observational data fed into a new supercomputer, supporting continuous work by the Met Office to improve forecast accuracy.

Green Marine UK Operations & Technology Director Myles Metson said the Orkney-based firm managed the launch of five gliders this year adding to previous projects with NOC dating back to 2022. Around 24 hours is required to complete glider deployment or recovery, which is planned within a one-week window.

Enhancing Data Collection for Weather and Ocean Forecasts

The deployment of underwater gliders by Green Marine UK in collaboration with the UK’s National Oceanography Centre and the Met Office marks a significant step towards improving data collection for weather and ocean forecasting. These gliders will operate for six-month intervals, gathering crucial information at ocean depths of up to 200m over a three-year period.

By collecting measurements such as salinity and temperature and transmitting them in near real-time to the Met Office, this project contributes to a comprehensive data set that supports forecast accuracy. The data collected will play a crucial role in enhancing the capabilities of the Met Office’s supercomputer, enabling more precise and reliable forecasts.

Ongoing Collaboration and Future Prospects

Green Marine UK’s continued collaboration with the National Oceanography Centre demonstrates a commitment to advancing marine technology and data collection practices. With previous successful projects dating back to 2022, the deployment of five additional gliders this year showcases the company’s expertise in managing complex marine operations.

As the gliders are strategically deployed and recovered within a one-week window, Green Marine UK ensures efficient data collection processes to support ongoing research and forecasting efforts. The long-term goal of this initiative is to enhance our understanding of ocean dynamics and improve the accuracy of weather and ocean forecasts.

Overall, the deployment of underwater gliders by Green Marine UK underscores the importance of data collection in marine research and forecasting. By leveraging advanced technology and strategic partnerships, this project contributes to ongoing efforts to enhance the resilience and sustainability of our marine environments.
