Cargo Lightering and Refloating Operations Commence for M/V Tim S. Dool
Today marks a crucial phase in the recovery efforts for the Canadian-flagged bulk carrier, M/V Tim S. Dool, as cargo lightering and refloating operations get underway. The vessel, which was carrying a cargo of wheat grain, ran aground on November 23, 2024, in U.S. waters near Massena, New York. The incident occurred in an area southwest of the Eisenhower Lock, raising concerns about potential shipping delays.
Fortunately, authorities have confirmed that there have been no injuries or environmental contamination resulting from the grounding of the 57-year-old bulk carrier, owned by Algoma Central Corporation. Despite being positioned outside the navigation channel, cargo operations are set to commence, necessitating speed restrictions in the surrounding area.
The recovery operation is expected to span several days, with plans in place for a temporary closure of a section of the Seaway once enough wheat cargo has been removed to attempt refloating the vessel. To minimize shipping disruptions, various agencies including the U.S. Coast Guard, Canadian Coast Guard, Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation, and St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation are working together in a coordinated response.
While the cause of the grounding remains under investigation, authorities have confirmed that no other vessels were involved in the incident. The focus now is on safely completing the lightering and refloating operations to ensure the timely resumption of normal shipping activities in the area.
