Hanwha Group Partners with Baker Hughes to Develop Small-Size Ammonia Gas Turbine Engines

Hanwha Group, in collaboration with energy technology company Baker Hughes, is embarking on a groundbreaking project to develop a new generation of small-size ammonia gas turbine engines. This innovative venture aims to harness the potential of ammonia as a carbon-free fuel source, particularly in applications such as shipping.

Baker Hughes, renowned for its wide range of gas turbines catering to various industries, is now looking to expand its portfolio by venturing into the development of small-size ammonia turbines. These turbines are envisioned to be suitable for marine, onshore, and offshore applications, offering environmentally friendly solutions for electric generation and mechanical drive.

Through a strategic partnership with Hanwha Ocean and Hanwha Power Systems, Baker Hughes aims to leverage its expertise in gas turbine technology alongside Hanwha’s proficiency in ammonia combustion systems. The collaborative effort has already yielded promising results, with successful testing of a proof-of-concept combustor using 100 percent ammonia as fuel gas.

Looking ahead, both companies are targeting to complete the full engine test with ammonia by the end of 2027, paving the way for the commercial availability of the new turbine in the 16MW power range. This development marks a significant milestone in the quest for eco-friendly propulsion solutions in the shipbuilding and shipping industry.

Game-Changing Technology for Carbon-Free Propulsion

The forthcoming ammonia gas turbine, based on Baker Hughes’ proven small-size turbine technology and PSM’s newly developed ammonia combustion system, holds immense potential for large ship owners seeking to transition to carbon-free propulsion systems. The turbine will support 100 percent ammonia combustion and dual fuel operation with a natural gas and ammonia blend, offering a versatile solution for sustainable marine transportation.

Hanwha Group envisions integrating the new turbine technology into LNG gas carriers and containerships by 2028, following approval in principle from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) in September 2023. This strategic move underscores the group’s commitment to driving innovation and sustainability in the maritime sector.

Accelerating the Transition to Hydrogen-Powered Turbines

Baker Hughes is at the forefront of exploring alternative fuel sources for gas turbines, with a focus on accelerating the transition from diesel motors to turbines powered by hydrogen and ammonia. The company’s successful testing of the world’s first 100 percent hydrogen turbine in January 2024 underscores its commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions.

With the commercial availability of hydrogen turbines and the impending launch of small-size ammonia turbines, Baker Hughes is poised to revolutionize the energy landscape, offering cutting-edge solutions for a carbon-neutral future.
