Hanwha Ocean Chosen as Preferred Bidder for Icebreaking Research Vessel Project

Hanwha Ocean has secured the position of the preferred bidder for an icebreaking research vessel project, under the guidance of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. The project is aimed at enhancing polar research capabilities at the Polar Research Institute, a branch of the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology.

The contract for this groundbreaking vessel is slated to be finalized this month, with an expected completion date of December 2029.

Key Features of the Vessel

The icebreaking research vessel, with a gross tonnage of 16,560, will be equipped with an advanced LNG dual-fuel electric propulsion system. It will have the capability to navigate through 1.5-meter-thick ice in both directions, making it a formidable Polar Class 3 vessel that can withstand extreme temperatures as low as -45 degrees Celsius.

In addition to its cutting-edge technical features, the vessel will also offer luxurious amenities for researchers and crew members. Comfortable cabins, reception rooms, and dining areas have been thoughtfully designed to provide a level of comfort comparable to that of a high-end cruise ship.

Building on Past Success

Building on its expertise in polar vessel construction, Hanwha Ocean has been involved in the development of icebreakers since 2008. The company has a proven track record in building icebreaking LNG carriers, with a total of 21 such vessels completed to date.

The new icebreaking research vessel represents a significant advancement in polar research capabilities, addressing the evolving needs of the scientific community in light of changing polar environments and eco-friendly regulations.

Future Growth and Development

As the Arctic region experiences accelerated sea ice melting, Hanwha Ocean recognizes the growing importance of the region for resources, logistics, and technology. The company is committed to further expanding its icebreaker fleet to capitalize on new opportunities in this dynamic region.

Moreover, Hanwha Ocean’s Product Strategy & Technology Center has recently been awarded a national project by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy. This project aims to develop a world-class Polar Class 2 icebreaker capable of year-round operation in high northern latitudes, further solidifying the company’s position as a leader in polar vessel construction.
