New Cybersecurity Solution for FPSO Units Receives Approval from ABS

A cutting-edge cybersecurity solution developed by Hanwha Ocean and SIGA Data Security to safeguard critical infrastructure and operations on floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) units has recently been granted approval in principle (AiP) by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

Designed specifically for protecting operational technology (OT) systems on FPSO units from cyber threats, this innovative solution aims to bolster overall cyber resilience in the offshore energy sector. ABS conducted thorough design reviews in compliance with class and statutory requirements to ensure the efficacy and reliability of the OT cyber solution.

The development of this cybersecurity solution is part of a long-term offshore technology collaboration agreement between ABS and Hanwha Ocean, highlighting a commitment to addressing the evolving challenges in offshore energy production.

Enhancing Cyber Resilience in Offshore Environments

Miguel Hernandez, Senior Vice President of Global Offshore at ABS, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “As connectivity increases for offshore assets, so do cyber risks. This new OT solution offers operators a way to mitigate vulnerabilities in their critical operations systems, providing a crucial layer of protection against cyber threats.”

Receiving AiP from ABS signifies a significant milestone for Hanwha Ocean, demonstrating the company’s dedication to innovation and operational resilience in offshore environments. Philippe Levy, President of Hanwha Ocean, emphasized the strategic partnership with ABS and SIGA Data Security, which enables them to deliver cutting-edge cybersecurity solutions aligned with industry compliance standards and segmentation architectures.

Levy added, “This achievement strengthens Hanwha Ocean’s competitive edge in FPSO bids, where robust cybersecurity measures are paramount. Our validated solutions offer enhanced process-level visibility, real-time threat detection, and remote operational oversight, ensuring that FPSO operators can meet stringent cybersecurity requirements.”
