Havila Holding Acquires Polarsyssel Offshore Supply Ship

Havila Holding, a leading maritime company, has recently acquired the Polarsyssel offshore supply ship from Fafnir Norway through its subsidiary Havila Skipsinvest. The vessel serves as the Governor of Svalbard’s service vessel and plays a crucial role in safety and emergency preparedness in the region.

Polarsyssel is responsible for patrolling the waters around Svalbard, carrying out inspection and enforcement tasks, search and rescue missions, environmental monitoring, and oil spill response. Fafnir has owned the vessel since its delivery in 2014, with Havila taking over daily operations in 2015. The ownership change will not impact the employment of the approximately 20 crew members who work permanently onboard.

Enhancements and Future Contracts

As part of the acquisition, Polarsyssel has undergone a significant upgrade, including the addition of a new helideck and an aft crane capable of lifting the Governor’s workboat, Fjordsyssel, onboard. Other improvements include a new reception and entrance area, as well as a technical room for storing and using heli-crew equipment when the Super Puma helicopter is onboard.

A new five-year contract with the Governor of Svalbard is set to commence on January 1, 2026, with the option for two additional years. This contract underscores the vessel’s continued importance in maintaining safety and preparedness in the region.

Strategic Growth for Havila Group

Njål Sævik, Chair of Havila Holding, expressed excitement about the acquisition, highlighting the vessel’s readiness for its upcoming contract. Sævik noted that the purchase of Polarsyssel aligns with Havila Group’s strategy to expand its shipping and offshore operations.

“We’ve been operating Polarsyssel since 2015. It’s a well-maintained vessel, ready for its next contract and continued service for the Governor of Svalbard. We look forward to continuing the strong collaboration and contributing to safety and preparedness in the region,” said Sævik.

The acquisition of Polarsyssel represents a significant milestone for Havila Holding, further solidifying its position as a key player in the maritime industry. The company’s commitment to growth and excellence bodes well for its future endeavors in the shipping and offshore sectors.
