Hyundai and Maersk Collaborate on Decarbonization Solutions for Vessels

HD Hyundai and A.P. Moller – Maersk have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a collaboration on decarbonization solutions for vessels. This partnership signifies a commitment to driving innovation and sustainability in the maritime industry.

Methanol-Powered Container Ships

Since 2021, HD Hyundai has received orders for a total of 19 methanol-powered container ships from Maersk. The successful delivery of the world’s first methanol-powered ultra-large container ship last year marked a significant milestone in the collaboration between the two companies in advancing decarbonization efforts in shipbuilding and shipping.

Exploring Fuel-Saving Technologies

As part of their collaboration, HD Hyundai and Maersk will conduct a six-month trial using Avikus’ HiNAS navigation solution and HD Hyundai Marine Solution’s OCEANWISE route optimization on a Maersk container vessel built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. The trial aims to demonstrate the fuel-saving and greenhouse gas emission reduction benefits of optimized navigation systems.

Ship Retrofitting for Decarbonization

The companies also plan to explore cooperation in the field of ship retrofitting for decarbonization. This includes optimizing engine efficiency, increasing cargo capacity, and retrofitting dual-fuel propulsion systems. Additionally, joint research will be conducted to assess the feasibility of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system.

Enhancing Global Supply Chain

HD Hyundai will leverage Maersk’s integrated logistics services to strengthen its global supply chain. This partnership will involve expanding ocean freight volumes through Maersk’s East-West network, utilizing airfreight services, land transportation, and warehousing infrastructure.

Tailored Logistics Solutions

The initial phase of the partnership will focus on providing tailored logistics solutions for HD Hyundai’s affiliates, including HD Hyundai XiteSolution and HD Hyundai Marine Solution. These solutions will enhance the stability and agility of the company’s global supply chain, ensuring efficient and reliable operations.
