Huisman to Deliver 5,000 mt Tub Mounted Crane for Japanese Offshore Wind Market

Huisman has secured a contract from Penta-Ocean Construction to supply a state-of-the-art 5,000 mt Tub Mounted Crane and monopile handling system for a cutting-edge heavy lift vessel tailored for the Japanese offshore wind industry.

In collaboration with Penta-Ocean Construction and vessel designer Ulstein, Huisman has developed a unique concept that seamlessly integrates the crane and handling tools into the new heavy lift vessel. This innovative design is set to revolutionize offshore wind installation operations in Japan.

World’s First Fully Integrated Heavy Lift Vessel

The upcoming vessel, specifically crafted for the Japanese offshore wind sector, will boast the title of being the world’s first fully integrated heavy lift vessel. It will offer one of the highest lifting capacities globally, making it a game-changer in the industry.

The 5,000 mt active heave-compensated Tub Mounted Crane features cutting-edge technology such as a dual main hoist and Universal Quick Connector, facilitating efficient and safe tool changes to enhance operational efficiency and minimize safety risks.

Key Advantages of Huisman Tub Mounted Crane

Some key advantages of the low weight Huisman Tub Mounted Crane include a compact tail swing for optimal deck space utilization, no counterweight requirement, full revolving capacity, and an in-house produced slew bearing for enhanced durability and performance.

Additionally, the Motion Compensated Pile Gripper, tailored for the installation of large-diameter, variable-length monopiles, is a crucial component of the vessel’s equipment. Its design enables seamless handling of monopiles over the vessel’s U-shaped stern, ensuring efficient installation operations.

With monopiles stored lengthwise on the vessel, the integrated upending system allows for direct handling from storage to installation, minimizing lifting operations and enhancing operational efficiency. The aft installation method also improves shielding, further boosting the vessel’s workability.

Commenting on the project, Tetsunori Ohshimo, Senior Managing Executive Officer, Head of the Offshore Wind Construction Business Divisions Group of Penta-Ocean Construction, expressed confidence in Huisman’s heavy lift and installation technology, emphasizing its potential to significantly contribute to the advancement of offshore wind projects in Japan.

With the delivery of the 5,000 mt Tub Mounted Crane and monopile handling system, Huisman is set to play a pivotal role in supporting the expansion of the Japanese offshore wind market, ushering in a new era of efficiency and innovation in offshore wind installation operations.
