The IMO’s Maritime Digitalisation Strategy: A Transformative Vision
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has unveiled a comprehensive work plan aimed at securing the adoption of a maritime digitalisation strategy by the IMO Assembly by the end of 2027.
This cross-cutting strategy is envisioned to encompass various aspects of IMO’s operations, fostering a globally interconnected, harmonized, and automated maritime sector.
Over the next year, a dedicated correspondence group will collaborate to identify both existing and emerging technologies, standards, and methodologies that can facilitate maritime digitalisation. The group will ensure alignment across IMO’s diverse committees, with a comprehensive report slated for submission next year ahead of the assembly session in late 2027.
IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez underscored the transformative potential of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous navigation, while acknowledging the associated challenges, including cybersecurity risks and the global digital divide.
Dominguez emphasized that the new strategy will play a pivotal role in integrating vessels and ports, enhancing logistics, optimizing routes, and ultimately contributing to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
