India’s Ambitious Offshore Wind Energy Plans

India has announced plans to launch an offshore wind energy tender totaling 4GW in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. This move is a significant step towards achieving India’s net-zero emissions target by 2070 and the goal of generating 50% of power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030. The country’s minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, emphasized the critical role that wind energy will play in reaching these ambitious targets.

The renewable energy budget for fiscal years 2025 and 2026 has seen a 53% increase to just over $3 billion, indicating India’s commitment to clean energy development. With the world’s fourth-largest installed wind capacity and ranking third globally in renewable energy generation, India is poised to lead in the transition to sustainable energy sources.

Joshi also announced plans to expand wind projects into new states like Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha, in addition to launching more offshore wind tenders. The integration of wind energy with solar and storage technologies will enable round-the-clock renewable power generation, further enhancing India’s energy security.

India boasts a diverse range of 33 wind turbine models, ranging from 225kW to 5.2MW, that can meet domestic demand and compete on a global scale. The country’s Wind Energy Roadmap and Wind Manufacturing Roadmap serve as guiding frameworks for fostering a resilient and self-reliant wind ecosystem.
