India’s Chidambaranar Port Trust Embarks on Groundbreaking Green Methanol Project

The Chidambaranar Port Trust in India has taken a significant step towards decarbonization by initiating the country’s first pilot-scale port decarbonization project. The project aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, promote green energy in the maritime industry, and align with the Indian government’s sustainable shipping objectives.

Working in collaboration with the Chidambaranar Port Authority, the port trust evaluated various alternative fuel options, including green hydrogen, green ammonia, green methane, and green methanol. After careful analysis, it was determined that green methanol was the most viable solution for achieving the port’s decarbonization goals by 2030.

The pilot project has received approval from India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, as well as the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, signaling the green light for implementation. Once completed, the project is poised to establish Chidambaranar Port as the first in the country to offer green methanol bunkering infrastructure.

Government Initiatives Driving Maritime Industry Transformation

The Indian government has been proactive in bolstering the maritime industry’s sustainability and efficiency. In January, projects worth ₹570 billion were introduced to enhance the capacity of Kandla Port in Gujarat, with a focus on operational improvements and economic development.

Furthermore, a maritime development fund of ₹250 billion was established in February to support green ship acquisitions, port development, and innovation in maritime logistics. The fund aims to drive growth in ship repair facilities, a sector that has shown steady progress in India.

Collaborations for Sustainable Maritime Practices

Leading shipbuilding and maintenance facility Cochin Shipyard Limited recently partnered with A.P. Moller-Maersk to explore eco-friendly practices, technical expertise sharing, and skill development opportunities. This collaboration underscores the industry’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Other major shipping companies, such as CMA CGM and MSC, have also expressed interest in strengthening their presence in India as the country strives to become a global maritime hub. These partnerships reflect a collective effort towards sustainable growth and operational excellence in the maritime sector.
