Iranian Naval Vessels Visit Malaysia’s Port Klang
Two Iranian naval vessels began their historic visit to Port Klang in Malaysia’s Malacca Straits on February 21. This visit marks a significant milestone in the relationship between Iran and Malaysia, with Malaysian newspapers noting it as the first visit by Iranian naval vessels to the port.
The Iranian Navy’s Moudge Class frigate IRINS Dena (F75) and the IRGC Navy’s drone carrier Shahid Mahdavi (C110-3) were part of the flotilla that arrived in Malaysia. This joint operation between the two Iranian naval entities is a rare occurrence, highlighting a new level of cooperation between them.
During their deployment, the Iranian flotilla spent at least three weeks at sea, traversing the waters off Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka. They also ventured further into the Indian Ocean, sailing south of the Equator.
Rear Admiral Shahram Irani, the Nedsa commander, revealed to Press TV that the deployment to Malaysia is one of five flotillas currently operating outside Iranian waters. This increased naval activity is a response to potential threats, particularly concerns about a possible Israeli attack aimed at disrupting Iran’s nuclear program.
The deployment of the Shahid Mahdavi marks its first operational mission outside Iranian waters, underscoring Iran’s expanding naval capabilities and willingness to engage in international operations.
