Iridium Communications has announced that its partner Navarino is assisting with the installation of Iridium Certus terminals on vessels operated by “K” Line Energy Shipping (UK) globally.

These terminals will complement Starlink terminals in “K” Line’s maritime hybrid connectivity solution.

The deployment of these terminals comes as “K” Line prepares to support the Northern Lights Joint Venture, which focuses on CO2 transport and storage services aimed at reducing industrial emissions across Europe and Norway.

Starlink will primarily serve crew welfare and routine business operations, while Iridium Certus will function as a backup during adverse weather conditions, emergencies, or in areas where other services may not be available.

This dual-system approach is designed to maintain operational continuity and ensure crew safety at sea.

Iridium is claimed to be the only satellite provider that can deliver voice and data services globally.

Its satellite network, positioned in Low-Earth Orbit (LEO), provides weather-resilient L-band connectivity and extensive global coverage, avoiding the permanent line of sight issues that affect geostationary (GEO) systems.

Vessels equipped with Iridium technology remain connected even when other systems fail, utilising small, solid-state terminals that are less susceptible to terrestrial interference, according to Iridium

Iridium’s solutions can serve as the primary connectivity option or complement VSAT and Starlink systems, enabling vessels to operate efficiently and safely.

Iridium maritime general manager and vice president Wouter Deknopper said: “Iridium L-band continues to be the de-facto maritime standard for satellite communications, and the logical and dependable companion to Ku and Ka-band systems.

“Regardless of whether a ship chooses a GEO or LEO broadband provider, Iridium is the ideal companion needed to support uninterrupted operations and critical connectivity that a vessel needs.”

In March 2024, Cosco Shipping (CSSC) announced the installation of Iridium communications hardware on its fleet of 1,417 commercial vessels under a new comprehensive deal.
