Italian Authorities Plan Offshore Wind Production Hubs in Augusta and Taranto

Italian authorities have announced plans to establish offshore wind production hubs at the ports of Augusta and Taranto. The inter-ministerial decree, signed by the ministries of infrastructure and transport, economy, and the environment, identified maritime state-owned areas suitable for the development of hubs capable of strengthening the country’s supply chain in the offshore renewable energy sector.

The two priority areas, Augusta and Taranto, were chosen based on criteria of technical and economic feasibility, space availability, construction timelines, and logistical connectivity. The planned infrastructure projects, which include modernisation, dredging, and dock upgrades, will enable the development of key activities such as the production, assembly, and launching of components for offshore wind farms.

The total investment value amounts to €78.3m ($91.4m), spread over three years starting in 2025, and will be financed through the reallocation of proceeds from the auctions of CO2 emission allowances. This initiative is part of a strategic path for the consolidation of Italy’s role in the Mediterranean as an industrial hub for offshore wind.
