Italy’s Terminale GNL Adriatico to Boost LNG Terminal Capacity Through Maintenance and Expansion
Italy’s Terminale GNL Adriatico is gearing up for maintenance and expansion work at its northern Adriatic Sea liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal starting next month. The primary goal of this endeavor is to enhance regasification output.
According to a recent announcement on social media by Adriatic LNG, the terminal will halt production on August 1 to undergo scheduled maintenance. The resumption of gas injection into the national grid is anticipated towards the end of August.
With a current capacity of 9.6 billion cubic meters per year, the terminal stood as Italy’s largest LNG storage facility in 2024, as reported by Statista. Following the upcoming capacity extension during the maintenance period, the terminal’s capacity is set to increase to an impressive 10.4 billion cubic meters per year.
The ownership of the Adriatic LNG terminal lies with Terminale GNL Adriatico, a company in which VTTI holds a 70% stake, with Snam owning the remaining 30%. Snam further fortified its position in the terminal through an increased stake acquisition in December of last year.
Situated approximately 15 kilometers off the Veneto region coastline in Italy, the plant commenced operations in 2009. It is seamlessly connected to the national distribution network through a dedicated pipeline.
Featuring a gravity-based structure (GBS) with two LNG tanks, the facility encompasses a regasification plant alongside mooring and LNG unloading facilities, solidifying its crucial role in the country’s energy infrastructure.
