Japan Energy Summit & Exhibition Opens in Tokyo

The Japan Energy Summit & Exhibition 2025 kicked off with a dynamic Opening Ceremony that set the stage for a pivotal three-day event focused on global cooperation, diversified supply, and pragmatic climate solutions. Delegates from over 50 countries gathered at Tokyo Big Sight to engage in critical conversations at the intersection of energy security and decarbonization.

The ceremony began with Yoshifumi Murase, Commissioner of Japan’s Agency for Natural Resources and Energy (METI), emphasizing Japan’s commitment to balancing climate ambition with industrial resilience and economic growth. Shinichi Sasayama, CEO of Tokyo Gas, highlighted the need for diversified supply in the face of global volatility and renewable integration.

The highlight of the Opening Ceremony was the Global CEO Panel titled “Securing Tomorrow: A Vision for Sustainable Growth in the Energy Sector”. Moderated by Shery Ahn from Bloomberg, the panel featured industry leaders Yukio Kani, Patrick Pouyanné, and Meg O’Neill from JERA, TotalEnergies, and Woodside Energy respectively. The panel discussed the importance of long-term relationships, diversified sources, and security of supply in the energy sector.

Yukio Kani stressed the fragility of Japan’s LNG import system and the need for diversification to mitigate risks. Patrick Pouyanné highlighted TotalEnergies’ strategy of diversifying LNG capacity to ensure resilience and affordability. Meg O’Neill emphasized the role of LNG in displacing higher emitting fuels while meeting the rising baseline demand for 24/7 power.

The Strategic Summit and Technical Conference will continue over the next two days, with 300+ speakers covering topics such as LNG, hydrogen, ammonia, carbon management, digitalization, and infrastructure investment. The exhibition floor features over 100 exhibitors showcasing technologies critical to Japan’s clean energy transformation, including the Climatetech Zone and Energy Innovators Challenge.
