JDR Cable Systems Completes Type Test Qualifications for 132kV Offshore Wind Cables

JDR Cable Systems (JDR), a part of the TFKable Group, has achieved a significant milestone by completing two new type test qualifications at 132kV for static and dynamic array cables. These tests support the next generation of fixed and floating offshore wind projects, demonstrating JDR’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge high-voltage cables manufactured in the U.K.

Supporting Larger Turbines and Longer Distances

The successful testing of the 132kV cables is crucial in enabling the deployment of larger turbines and the transmission of power over longer distances. This advancement in cable technology will contribute to more efficient and cost-effective offshore wind energy production.

JDR’s static cable development and testing received support from the Offshore Wind Growth Partnership, with collaboration from a leading materials supplier. The extensive testing was carried out at the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult facility.

The 132kV cables will be manufactured at JDR’s upgraded Hartlepool facility and the new high-voltage cable manufacturing plant in Cambois, near Blyth, Northumberland.

Meeting Industry Requirements

With the industry’s shift towards larger offshore wind turbines exceeding 20 MW and operating in deeper waters, there is a growing demand for higher voltage cables. By doubling the voltage of the standard 66kV array cable, JDR’s technology enables increased transmission capacity between turbines, contributing to cost reduction and cleaner energy production.

The successful qualification of the 132kV static cable technology is complemented by JDR’s achievement in developing dynamic cables for floating wind applications under the Floating Offshore Wind Demonstration Programme.

Advancing Offshore Wind Technology

The AHEAD (Advanced High-Voltage Export and Array Dynamic) cable project demonstrated the viability of 132kV dynamic cables for floating wind applications. Rigorous testing, including over 1.5 million tension-bending cycles, validated the reliability of the advanced cable design for dynamic offshore conditions.

Joe Cole, Technology Manager – Power Cables at JDR, expressed pride in providing innovative solutions to the energy sector ahead of time. He emphasized the significance of dynamic cables and advanced 132kV technology in driving the deployment of both fixed and floating offshore wind projects.

As part of its commitment to driving innovation in high-voltage subsea technology, JDR is actively contributing to international standards bodies and industry projects such as CIGRE and the Carbon Trust’s Offshore Wind Accelerator High Voltage Array Systems project.

With a focus on advancing offshore wind technology, JDR is at the forefront of developing, validating, and delivering new solutions that benefit the offshore energy industry and electricity consumers.
