E&S Tankers Conducts First Bio-LNG Bunkering for Newbuild Dual-Fuel Tanker
E&S Tankers, a joint venture of Essberger Tankers and Stolt Tankers, recently achieved a significant milestone by conducting the first bio-LNG bunkering for its newbuild dual-fuel stainless steel parcel chemical tanker, John T. Essberger, at the Hamina LNG terminal in Finland.
The company proudly shared this achievement on social media on April 4, marking a year since the terminal hosted its first-ever ship bunkering operation.
This bunkering operation is seen as “an important step” in E&S Tankers’ sustainability commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and explore short-term sustainability solutions.
“Bio-LNG, derived from European feedstocks and liquefied biomethane sourced from the gas grid, provides a viable means for us to further decarbonize our operations utilizing the existing LNG infrastructure onboard. This transition aligns with our Group’s efforts and bolsters our mission to deliver efficient, responsible, and safe shipping solutions,” stated E&S Tankers.
About the Vessel
John T. Essberger is a 6,600 dwt stainless steel parcel chemical tanker constructed by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard Dingheng for E&S Tankers as part of a shipbuilding order comprising 4+4 units. Equipped with dual-fuel LNG propulsion and a certified Finnish/Swedish 1A ice class, the vessel benefits from integrated HyProp ECO propulsion solutions provided by MAN Energy Solutions.
The vessel’s design includes optimized hull features and equipment, resulting in a notable 30% improvement in energy efficiency. Furthermore, the vessel is capable of utilizing shore power connections during cargo operations, further enhancing its environmental credentials.
Future Sustainability Initiatives
As part of its fleet renewal and emission reduction strategy, German shipping company John T. Essberger is also developing 13,000 dwt methanol-ready chemical tankers with 1A ice class and stainless steel tanks at the Rainbow shipyard in Nantong, China.
With a steadfast commitment to sustainability and innovation, E&S Tankers continues to drive the industry towards a greener future through the adoption of bio-LNG and advanced propulsion technologies.
