Kongsberg Discovery Unveils Geomatics: Revolutionizing Ocean Data Management
Kongsberg Discovery has introduced Geomatics, a cutting-edge digital product poised to revolutionize how ocean data is captured, managed, and accessed. Launched at Ocean Business 2025, this innovative solution is set to transform the way traditional and uncrewed vessel operators handle data operations, unlocking operational insights and fostering global collaboration between vessels and shore-based teams.
As the pace of ocean activity increases and initiatives like the UN Decade of Ocean Science aim to map the seabed by 2030, the demand for efficient management of vast volumes of complex data has never been more critical. Modern survey vessels, often operating alongside AUVs and USVs, generate extensive data streams from a diverse array of sensors, including environmental, meteorological, and acoustic sensors.
Audun Berg, EVP of Kongsberg Discovery, emphasizes the significance of Geomatics in streamlining data management processes: “Survey teams are already busy enough without grappling with incompatible formats and fragmented systems. Geomatics eliminates these challenges by providing users with a single, user-friendly platform that allows them to focus on the mission at hand, simplifying complexity and optimizing efficiency.”
Geomatics is the inaugural Blue Insight product, offering a suite of software services that simplify ocean data management. Key benefits include centralized data collection and logging from all onboard and remote sensors, automatic cataloguing and indexing for data exploration and analysis, and seamless data distribution to mirrored cloud environments or other data management systems.
Users can visualize data in real-time and historically, with georeferenced data displayed in dashboards, maps, and time series viewers. The platform offers a high degree of customization, enabling users to filter and tailor displays according to their specific needs.
Geomatics is designed to be AI and machine learning ready, paving the way for the integration of digital twin technology and enhancing processing capabilities. An Analytics product is also in development, allowing for automated processing and in-depth data analysis.
Early adopters have already begun testing Geomatics, with the solution being rolled out to research vessels such as R/V Anna Weber-van Bosse operated by NIOZ, the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, and Statsraad Lehmkuhl for the One Ocean Expedition (OOE).
Geir Pedersen, Researcher and Member of OOE’s Scientific Committee, underscores the importance of Geomatics for the One Ocean Expedition: “It’s vital to have a complete record of the vast quantity of scientific data we collect with Statsraad Lehmkuhl. Geomatics enables seamless data access for researchers both onboard and onshore as they conduct their essential work.”
As part of the rollout, Kongsberg will merge its existing Marine Data Management (MDM) product into Geomatics. Existing customers will be offered an attractive migration package to upgrade to this cutting-edge platform.
