Kongsberg Maritime has announced a groundbreaking collaboration with India’s Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) to explore the design of India’s first indigenous polar research vessel. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during the prestigious Nor-Shipping 2025 event in Oslo, marking a significant step towards enhancing India’s polar research capabilities.

The partnership signifies India’s commitment to strengthening its scientific presence in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. The MoU underscores the growing global demand for cutting-edge, sustainable research platforms to support polar science expeditions.

With its wealth of experience in ship design, Kongsberg Maritime is well-equipped to lead this collaborative effort. The company has a proven track record in delivering sophisticated polar research vessels for countries like the United Kingdom and Norway. By leveraging advanced propulsion, automation, and mission-critical systems, Kongsberg Maritime specializes in designing vessels tailored for extreme polar environments and challenging ice conditions.

Annette Holte, Country Manager – India, Kongsberg Maritime, expressed confidence in the partnership, stating, “This collaboration underscores Kongsberg Maritime’s expertise and unwavering commitment to supporting scientific exploration in the most demanding environments globally.”

She added, “We are excited to contribute to India’s vision for a state-of-the-art polar research platform. This initiative strongly aligns with the ‘Make in India’ policy, and we are eager to collaborate closely with GRSE to explore innovative, locally driven design solutions.”

The proposed polar research vessel is set to facilitate a diverse range of scientific missions, encompassing climate research, oceanography, and polar logistics. By integrating Kongsberg Maritime’s cutting-edge technologies, the vessel will ensure safe, efficient, and environmentally conscious operations in polar regions.
