Overall, the boating industry in Finland faced challenges in 2024, with a significant decrease in new boat registrations. However, the trade of used boats remained active, indicating ongoing interest in boating activities. The turnover for Finnboat’s member companies was close to €800 million, highlighting the economic importance of the industry in Finland.

Despite the challenges, there are signs of optimism for the upcoming boating season. The Helsinki Vene Båt show is expected to showcase more boats than the previous year, indicating a potential turnaround in the industry. Consumer caution and weak purchasing power affected sales, especially in the smaller outboard boat category. However, the gradual recovery of purchasing power is expected to improve the situation.

Finland has a strong tradition of boating, with almost the entire population engaging in boating activities. The recovery of demand for small and medium-sized outboard boats is closely tied to consumer purchasing power and confidence in the economy. While the recovery has been slower than expected, there is hope for improvement in the near future.

Despite the decrease in new boat registrations, the trade of used boats remained active. Boats are considered long-lasting consumer goods, changing ownership multiple times during their lifecycle. The restructuring of Nimbus and the closure of its Finnish production facilities were notable events in the industry in 2024.

Looking at the export and import statistics, Finnish boat exports decreased in value during January–November 2024. The USA, Norway, and Sweden were among the largest export destinations, with sailboats being a significant export category. Imports also decreased, with Mexico, Poland, and Sweden being the top import countries for boats.

Overall, while 2024 presented challenges for the boating industry in Finland, there are signs of recovery and optimism for the future. The industry’s resilience and adaptability will be key in navigating through the ongoing challenges and uncertainties.

Imports from Sweden decreased by 15 per cent in 2024, according to recent statistics. The boat import statistics for the five largest import countries show a significant decline in imports across the board. Mexico, Poland, Great Britain, and Sweden all experienced decreases in boat imports, with Sweden seeing a 15 per cent drop.

On the other hand, France saw a massive increase in boat imports, with a growth rate of 18490 per cent. Despite this outlier, the total import figure for the five countries combined was down by 34.80 per cent.

In Finland, the most popular boating regions were Uusimaa and Southwest Finland, where 40 per cent of the country’s new watercraft were registered. Municipalities like Helsinki, Kuopio, Espoo, and Turku were the most active in terms of newly registered watercraft.

At the end of 2024, there were a total of 244,258 registered watercraft in Finland, with Helsinki, Espoo, and Turku having the highest numbers. Additionally, Finnish boatbuilder Saxdor Yachts is expanding its production capacity with a new shipyard in Larsmo, Finland.

The Finnish boating industry’s economic barometer predicts a turnaround, with estimates indicating that turnover and staff levels will improve in 2025. Despite layoffs in 15 per cent of responding companies in 2024, the industry remains confident in its future. Companies are optimistic about turnover and workforce levels, with a majority predicting stability or growth in the coming year.
