South Korea’s HD Hyundai Partners with Maersk to Develop Decarbonised Shipping Technology
South Korea’s largest shipbuilding group, HD Hyundai, has recently signed a partnership with A.P. Moller-Maersk to collaborate on decarbonised shipping technology and global integrated logistics services. The memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed at the HD Hyundai Global R&D Center in Seongnam, Gyeonggi, with key figures from both companies in attendance.
Under the MOU, Maersk will integrate HD Hyundai’s ship decarbonisation technologies into its fleet to reduce carbon emissions. In return, HD Hyundai will leverage Maersk’s integrated logistics services across its subsidiaries.
Maersk’s upcoming newbuilds, which will be delivered by HD Hyundai, are expected to be equipped with cutting-edge navigation solutions like Hinas, developed by Avikus, a subsidiary of HD Hyundai. Additionally, the AI-based decarbonisation and economic operation solution, Oceanwise, developed by HD Hyundai Marine Solutions, will be implemented.
The partnership aims to enhance engine efficiency, increase container ship cargo capacity, and retrofit dual-fuel propulsion systems. Furthermore, the companies will explore the feasibility of a solid oxide fuel cell system in collaboration with HD Hyundai’s subsidiary, HD Hydrogen.
“Our partnership with HD Hyundai has been built on mutual trust and respect over the years,” stated Maersk Chairman, Robert Maersk Uggla. “This MOU signifies a significant milestone in our relationship, solidifying our collaboration and setting the stage for future joint endeavors.”
