President Ferdinand Marcos Implements Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers

President Ferdinand Marcos oversaw the signing of the implementing rules and regulations of the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in the protection and enhancement of rights for Filipino seafarers in both local and international shipping.

The newly enacted law aims to establish a comprehensive framework that safeguards and enhances the welfare of Filipino seafarers, while also focusing on improving their education, training, and cadetship programs to elevate their skills in the maritime industry.

During the event, Marcos emphasized key components of the law, such as the creation of one-stop shop centers for seafarers and provisions guaranteeing fair medical treatment and access to free legal representation.

“This landmark legislation not only paves the way for industry growth but also underscores our commitment to fostering progressive and equitable policies within the maritime sector,” Marcos stated.

Furthermore, the law sets forth mechanisms, regulations, and procedures to ensure prompt and just resolution and execution of decisions pertaining to seafarers’ salaries, wages, statutory benefits, and claims for death and disability.
