Simon Møkster Shipping’s fleet is being supported with flexible allocation of pooled Starlink Low Earth Orbit (LEO) bandwidth by Marlink.

The transition to a pooled bandwidth model is part of Simon Møkster Shipping’s broader digitalisation programme.

According to Marlink, the pooling of bandwidth between vessels within the same fleet allows for capacity to be allocated to assets based on deployment needs.

Additionally, the pooled model provides “baseline flexibility” to utilise “best-effort” LEO internet for crew welfare services while ensuring “guaranteed” bandwidth through VSAT for business applications.

Marlink maritime president Tore Morten Olsen said: “At Marlink, we’re committed to enabling vessel operators like Simon Møkster Shipping to turn complex connectivity challenges into opportunities—wherever they operate. By pooling bandwidth across the fleet, they gain the flexibility to adapt in real time to operational and locational needs, unlocking new levels of efficiency, agility, and performance.”

Simon Møkster Shipping, headquartered in Stavanger, Norway, is a provider of support vessels to the offshore energy sector.

With a fleet of 15 vessels operating primarily in the North and Barents Seas, the company employs around 500 individuals onshore and offshore.

Simon Møkster Shipping ICT manager Terje Gjerde said: “Simon Møkster Shipping accelerates our digital journey with a new level of flexibility and efficiency offered by the Starlink pooled bandwidth model. With Marlink as our trusted partner, we’re not just staying connected, we’re gaining the digital edge we need to stay ahead in a highly competitive market.”

Under Simon Møkster Shipping’s broader digitlaisation programme, Marlink completed a fleet-wide upgrade with its Sealink NextGen hybrid network solution in May 2024.

The Sealink NextGen solution includes Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) and Unified Threat Management (UTM) cyber solutions as standard features, in view of the increased cyber risks associated with LEO internet solutions.

Recently, Marlink released its Security Operations Centre (SOC) report from the second half of 2024, which highlighted the growing sophistication of cyber threats targeting maritime users.

Marlink’s SOC report revealed that cybercriminals have been enhancing their attack capabilities by incorporating new technologies and refining their strategies.

Over a six-month period leading up to December 2024, Marlink’s global SOC network observed security activities on 1,998 merchant and leisure vessels, recording nine billion security events and 39 billion firewall events.
