Kongsberg Maritime Wins Design and Equipment Contract for Methanol-Ready Subsea Vessels
Norway-headquartered marine technology player Kongsberg Maritime has secured a new design and equipment assignment for two multipurpose subsea vessels that are set to be methanol-ready dual-fuel ships with battery hybrid technology. These vessels are intended for advanced offshore operations under harsh conditions.
The contract with Olympic Group involves the UT7623 sustainable energy vessel (SEV) designs for two subsea construction ships that will run on methanol and feature battery hybrid technology. The vessels, optimized for efficiency and flexibility, will integrate cutting-edge technology such as rim-drive propulsion, hybrid power, and winch systems.
Industry Leading Innovation
Stig Remøy, CEO & President of Olympic, stated, “At Olympic, we have always been at the forefront of innovation, setting new standards for sustainable offshore operations. The UT7623 SEV vessels build on our experience in renewable energy and oil and gas, offering unmatched flexibility and efficiency.”
Designed in collaboration with Olympic, the vessels are expected to be the most energy-efficient in their category, featuring rim-drive electric azimuth propulsion, retractable azimuth bow thrusters, hybrid battery power, an integrated bridge system, and more. These vessels aim to exceed modern offshore operation demands with low fuel consumption.
Environmental Sustainability
Per Kristian Furø, Sales Director at Kongsberg Maritime, added, “We are excited to deliver the UT7623 SEV vessels to Olympic. These vessels represent the latest offering from our ship design portfolio, setting new benchmarks in energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.”
With delivery scheduled for 2027, the vessels will be constructed at the CMHI shipyard in China and operate in renewable energy and oil and gas sectors. The vessels are designed to surpass Paris Agreement requirements and contribute to a greener maritime industry.
Continued Innovation
This contract follows Kongsberg Maritime’s recent agreement to revamp a double-ended car ferry for emission-free battery-powered operations, showcasing the company’s commitment to sustainable marine solutions.
