The Success of SKF and Proteus Marine Renewables in the MeyGen Tidal Energy Project

SKF, in collaboration with Proteus Marine Renewables, has achieved a major breakthrough in the renewable energy sector with their cutting-edge technology deployed in the MeyGen tidal stream array. This project, operated by SAE Renewables in Scotland’s Pentland Firth, has been running smoothly for over six years without any unplanned or disruptive maintenance needs.

Since its inception in 2018, SKF’s systems have been operating continuously at 1.5MW, showcasing exceptional reliability and longevity in the demanding marine environment. This success validates the commercial viability of tidal energy as a sustainable source of power with vast potential globally.

Looking ahead, SKF plans to supply fully integrated 3MW power trains to Proteus, offering a seamless, plug-and-play solution that streamlines the supply chain process. This collaboration aims to further enhance the capabilities of renewable ocean energy systems and contribute an additional minimum of 59 MW to the existing 6 MW pilot array at MeyGen.

Fraser Johnson, O&M Manager for the MeyGen tidal array, expressed excitement about the project’s progress, stating, “The successful operation and performance of our existing turbines have proven the reliability of this technology and its potential as a predictable source of renewable energy. We are excited to collaborate with Proteus Marine Renewables with the support of SKF as we progress from a pilot project to full commercial deployment.”

Thomas Fröst, President of Independent and Emerging Business at SKF, emphasized the importance of tidal stream power in diversifying the global energy mix and reducing carbon emissions. He stated, “Abundant resources coupled with the predictability of tidal flows make it a viable and trusted technology which we are proud to be supporting at such a critical time for the world’s future energy strategy.”
