MILES: The New Name for MI LNG Company
MI LNG Company, a joint venture company established by Japanese giants Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Imabari Shipbuilding, is set to undergo a transformation as it expands its vessel portfolio beyond LNG carriers.
Effective January 1, 2025, the company will be known as Marine-design Initiative for Leading Edge Solution (MILES).
A Brief History
Originally founded in April 2013, MI LNG Company was created as a collaboration between MHI and Imabari Shipbuilding with a focus on designing and selling LNG carriers.
Expansion into New Horizons
In July 2023, the company expanded its operations by partnering with Nihon Shipyard (NSY) to undertake design work for various commercial ships beyond LNG carriers, aligning with the evolving demands of the maritime industry.
With the maritime sector increasingly embracing decarbonization efforts, the demand for low-carbon fuels such as LNG, ammonia, and methanol is on the rise. In response to this shift, MILES will venture into the design development of liquefied CO2 carriers (LCO2 carriers) to meet future market demands.
Innovative Collaborations
MILES, in collaboration with Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, has initiated the joint development of new LCO2 carriers to facilitate large-scale international transportation of CO2. Furthermore, a consortium comprising industry leaders like K Line, MOL, NYK Line, Imabari Shipbuilding, and JMU Corporation has commenced joint studies to establish standard specifications and designs for LCO2 carriers.
Embracing Change for a Sustainable Future
As MILES embarks on these new initiatives, the company recognizes the importance of adaptability and responsiveness to industry needs. Through its rebranding, MILES aims to enhance its agility in catering to a spectrum of requirements in the shipping and shipbuilding sectors, ultimately contributing to the sustainable growth and development of society and industry.
