Japanese Shipping Giant MOL Joins e-NG Coalition to Drive Energy Transition

Japanese shipping major Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has joined the e-NG Coalition, an international alliance seeking to promote the role of electric natural gas (e-NG or e-methane) in the energy transition.

On March 1, 2025, MOL became a member of the e-NG Coalition, aiming to establish a stable international supply chain for next-generation fuels and accelerate initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of the shipping industry.

With MOL’s addition, the alliance now boasts 20 participating companies, working together towards a sustainable future.

Founded in October 2024, the e-NG Coalition is dedicated to promoting e-NG, creating a global market with standardized emissions accounting and certification protocols, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders in the e-NG value chain.

E-methane, or e-NG, is a synthetic methane derived from CO2 and hydrogen, poised to play a vital role in achieving carbon neutrality worldwide, leveraging existing LNG infrastructure.

Besides utilizing carbon-neutral e-methane as marine fuel, MOL is committed to expanding the use of e-methane and establishing a robust value chain by developing a synthetic fuel supply network, drawing on its expertise in LNG transport and experience in ocean transportation of liquefied CO2.
