Montrose Port to Launch Shore Power at Berth 3 in February 2025

Exciting developments are underway at Scottish Montrose Port as preparations are being made to install shore power at Berth 3, with operations scheduled to go live in February 2025. This initiative marks a significant milestone for the port and the maritime industry as a whole.

Upon completion of the installation, 30% of the port’s berths will be electrified, allowing offshore energy support vessels to connect to Plug Montrose, a cutting-edge shore power facility developed in collaboration with Norwegian specialist Plug. This partnership between Montrose Port Authority and Plug Shore Power is a testament to their commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Shifting to shore power will enable vessels to reduce emissions by powering onboard functions with electricity instead of traditional diesel engines. The electricity supplied through Plug Montrose comes with a Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO), further enhancing the environmental benefits of this initiative.

By embracing shore power, Montrose Port is taking a crucial step towards reducing the environmental impact of its operations and supporting the decarbonization of vessel operations. The benefits of shore power to the maritime sector are numerous, including reduced emissions, improved energy efficiency, enhanced welfare for crew members, and demonstrating sustainability leadership.

In a groundbreaking move last year, Montrose Port Authority became the first port in Scotland to offer a shore power service for offshore energy supply vessels. This service, which significantly reduces harmful emissions, noise pollution, and fuel consumption, was initially launched at berths 1 and 2 following a substantial upgrade to the port’s infrastructure by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN).

The successful testing phase of the shore power facility saw the Norwegian vessel, Magne Viking, from Viking Supply Ships, make the inaugural connection. This milestone underscores the port’s commitment to embracing innovative solutions for sustainable maritime operations.

As the launch of shore power at Berth 3 draws closer, Montrose Port is poised to set a new standard for environmentally-conscious port operations in Scotland and beyond. With a focus on reducing emissions and promoting sustainability, Montrose Port is paving the way for a greener future in the maritime industry.
