MSC World America Honoured With Platinum Pearl Award At Naming Ceremony

MSC Cruises’ newest ship, MSC World America, was honoured with the Platinum Pearl Award by Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) during its naming ceremony held in Miami on April 9.

The award recognises 20 years of MSC Cruises’ continuous work toward improving health, safety and environmental protection across its fleet.

The Platinum Pearl Award reflects MSC Cruises’ voluntary commitment to maintaining some of the world’s highest standards. The company follows a comprehensive integrated certification system, which includes global ISO certifications such as:

  • ISO 21070 for managing waste and protecting the marine environment
  • ISO 45001 for ensuring health and safety
  • ISO 22000 for maintaining food safety
  • ISO 50001 for improving energy efficiency

Additionally, MSC World America also holds Bureau Veritas’ Cleanship notation, which shows the ship’s efforts to minimise air and water pollution and reduce waste through proactive systems.

The vessel also has additional class notations that focus on controlling underwater noise, helping to protect marine life from sound disturbances.

The ship has been specially built with energy efficiency in mind. It exceeds the requirements of the International Maritime Organisation’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI).

The ship is powered by next-generation LNG (liquefied natural gas) engines and is ready for a transition to renewable fuels, including bio-LNG and synthetic fuels.

It is fitted with shore power connection capabilities. This means it can turn off its engines and reduce emissions while docked at ports that offer shore power.

The vessel also features an advanced wastewater treatment plant and a recycling management system to handle waste onboard more efficiently.

Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore’s President, Matthieu de Tugny, said the award recognises MSC Cruises’ two-decade journey of meeting and exceeding strict international standards.

He stated that the company has shown a strong commitment to safe, sustainable, and efficient shipping, and that BV is proud to support them in their ongoing efforts.

Emilio La Scala, the president and managing director of MSC Cruise Management, said the award is a result of the combined efforts of the entire company, both at sea and on land.
