Hong Kong’s Sun Ferry Takes Delivery of New Eco-Friendly Catamaran

Hong Kong-based ferry operator Sun Ferry has taken delivery of Xin Ming Zhu 30, a new 35-meter diesel-electric catamaran. The vessel, built by Guangzhou-based AFAI Southern Shipyard, is the latest addition to Sun Ferry’s fleet designed by Incat Crowther.

The purpose-built catamaran will serve inter-island commuter and tourism routes in Hong Kong, connecting Peng Chau, Mui Wo, Chi Ma Wan, and Cheung Chau. With a capacity of 300 passengers, Xin Ming Zhu 30 is equipped with Veth azimuth thrusters for efficient maneuverability at speeds of up to 14 knots, making it ideal for berthing at various piers along its routes.

What sets Xin Ming Zhu 30 apart is its diesel-electric propulsion system, designed to reduce emissions and improve sustainability. The vessel also features 72 solar panels that generate 7.5 kilowatts of onboard power, further enhancing its eco-friendly credentials.

“This vessel reflects Sun Ferry’s commitment to future-focused design solutions that not only meet operational needs but exceed customer expectations. With diesel-electric propulsion, solar technology, and passenger-centric design, it sets a new benchmark for sustainable and efficient ferry services in Hong Kong,” said Sam Mackay, Technical Manager at Incat Crowther.

The delivery of Xin Ming Zhu 30 follows the introduction of two 45-meter conventional diesel-powered vessels to Sun Ferry’s fleet. The remaining three vessels, all 45 meters in size, are scheduled for delivery by the end of 2025, completing the fleet renewal program led by Incat Crowther and AFAI Southern Shipyard.

Continued Innovation in Ferry Design

Earlier this month, Incat Crowther announced the successful sea trials of two next-generation catamaran ferries for Dumai Express, poised to revolutionize ferry operations in Indonesia. These vessels promise significant fuel savings and reduced carbon emissions, showcasing the ongoing commitment to innovation in maritime transportation.
